The Flaming Lips’ stage show is a decadent, LSD-loving feast for the senses. By now, the consummate, psychedelic art-rockers – who regularly play to festival audiences of 20,000-plus – have that gimmick-heavy act down to a science. That’s why their intimate Big Sur performance Sept. 11, 2012, was so impressive: The Lips didn’t pare down anything in front of the audience of 400, they simply adapted their goods to the woods. From frontman Wayne Coyne’s giant hamster globe, which he rode into the audience, to the oversized papier-mâche figures to the laser emitting hands to the oceans of confetti blasting into the air to the disco ball as big as a Yugo, this was bliss.
