Before President Donald Trump was sworn in to his second term, before Pete Hegseth was appointed as the Secretary of Defense, before that title was changed to Secretary of War, before the seemingly hourly list of indignities from Washington began to bombard us constantly, there was a time when it seemed like public awareness could change things for the better. That time goes back to November 2024, when Monterey City Attorney Christine Davi found herself suddenly in the center of national media coverage. Then-presumptive-nominee Hegseth had been investigated in 2017 by the Monterey Police Department for alleged sexual assault. No charges were ever filed, but the police report revealed major concerns about Hegseth’s character. Davi, without ever weighing in on politics, weighed in on transparency by releasing the report (redacted but still quite detailed). It didn’t change any outcomes, but it did solidify the City of Monterey’s leadership in favoring disclosure, to the benefit of the public.
