Back in the Old West, horse doctors were mostly self-taught, using pamphlets and books that spread knowledge on how to treat common equine ailments. Meanwhile, back East, the practice of veterinary medicine was gaining ground in response to spreading livestock diseases. Schools began opening in 1857 and the American Veterinary Medical Association was founded in 1863. For decades the focus on veterinarian medicine was on livestock but as people’s views on animals shifted, more and more veterinarians went into practice to care for pets of all kinds, just like Pacific Grove Animal Hospital does today, led by Dr. Brynie Kaplan Dau. Readers have voted her the best veterinarian four years in a row, due to her love of animals, her compassion and her ability to listen to pet owners’ concerns.
