Big Sur Taco’s story begins in 2017 when the Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge was damaged and closed, creating “Big Sur Island.” Saul Reos and his girlfriend drove over Nacimiento-Fergusson Road to reach the disconnected coastline and started selling tacos to visiting foot traffic coming off a newly opened trail that allowed tourists (at least those willing to hike) to start coming back to Big Sur in July 2017. They didn’t have much – a grill and a tent – set up first at Loma Vista and later in front of the Henry Miller Library. The truck came later, in 2018. These days the tacos (featuring organic ingredients and homemade tortillas) can be found at the Carmel Valley Farmers Market on Sundays and from time to time near lake El Estero in Monterey or at Ryan Ranch. The secret to their success and devoted following? “The secret is love,” Reos says. “We make everything with plenty of love.”
