When Pete and Karen Scudder started their roofing business in 1982 at home, it was very much a DIY venture. “We had a tar kettle and everything, but it was Prunedale and you can get away with a little bit more out there,” Pete Scudder recalls. In the 38 years since they’ve grown up, added a generation (a daughter is chief estimator) and expanded their offerings to a huge range of materials, and opened an entire solar division. They’ve always been problem-solvers: “We were seeing solar companies that didn’t have roofing experience and we were trying to patch what they had done,” Scudder says. “I said, ‘We should be doing this ourselves.’”
