City of Seaside’s Plans for Developing Bayonet & Black Horse

Here’s part of the plan to address the region’s housing crisis: Build more housing. Here’s a persnickety obstacle to that plan: a restriction on new water hookups on the Monterey Peninsula. Here’s a creative way around it: Petition the court to approve a water swap from a golf course to new housing. Improbable? Yes. Successful? Yes. The city of Seaside took their proposal to the Seaside Groundwater Basin Watermaster and then to Monterey County Superior Court, and received the blessing to transfer 450 acre-feet of water per year from Bayonet & Black Horse golf courses to proposals at Campus Town and Main Gate; the golf greens will be irrigated using recycled water from Pure Water Monterey, and the city could see 1,500 new units of housing.
