The whole obsession with IPAs? It was never democratic. Some beer nerds selected the hoppiest, strongest beers they could come up with and, like Russians interfering with an election, persuaded us we all loved them. Then Alvarado Street Brewery listened to the people – at least those of us who enjoy the ability to drink two beers without getting hammered – and they created the 4.5-percent lager they call Monterey Beer, now available in six-packs at convenience and grocery stores all over town. It’s drinkable, refreshing and crisp. Like democracy itself, this beer is a nod to regular people.
