The sign above the double doors to this pediatric practice, established 40 years ago and independently operated, used to read: “I’d turn back if I were you.” It was a mischievous joke, borrowed from The Wizard of Oz. But no one listened. Adults who came here as kids (in the ’80s, perhaps?), now bring their own kids. They come for the friendly and competent doctors, nurse practitioners, lactation specialists and support staff. They come for the prudent measures, like a lobby split into contagious and non-contagious sides (with a separate door to the examining rooms for contagious patients). They come for the guarantees that all children will be seen regardless of ability to pay, and the 24-hour doctors on call. They come for the fun atmosphere, including toys and books in the lobby and themed costume days. By the way, the sign was changed to a Dr. Seuss quote: “A person’s a person no matter how small.”
