Like the Weekly, 2018 was also a milestone 30th anniversary year for sculptor Richard McDonald. He was classically trained as a painter and illustrator before switching, under his own self-taught tutelage, to sculpture in 1988. He’s since achieved great success with his taut, twisty, moody figurative bronzes of dancers, athletes and performers – works in which you can see lines scraped across the contours of their bodies like cross hatch marks. It’s captivating stuff.
