Monterey Museum of Art

559 Pacific St., Monterey 720 Via Mirada, Monterey (831) 372-5477, montereyart.org

So this is an art museum with multiple galleries within it, not simply an art gallery. And a lot of its collection is not contemporary in the newer iterations. But never mind the semantics – locals adore the Monterey Museum of Art. Some new developments include the newish Currents and FLUX galleries that tout one local artist each month; a resurrected La Mirada (which was bequeathed by Frank Work in 1983) hosting music and talks; and this year’s 60th anniversary events, culminating this summer with David Hockney’s digital sketches of Yosemite.
