Skydivers aren’t the only daredevils making use of Marina Airport’s wide open spaces. When the sound of screeching tires echoes across town on certain weekends, that’s when the drivers of Drift Central are doing their thing. That would be the automotive art of drifting, wherein the driver frees tire traction and slides this way and that, tires smoking and screeching, while maintaining control. The tarmac becomes a playground for mostly youngish dudes in modified Toyota Corollas and Supras, Mazda RX-7s, BMW M3s, Acura Integras, Nissan Skylines, filing in a line to skid around the course. For spectators and passengers, it’s $10 a person; and there are instructors who’ll teach you the fine art. For drivers, there are rules about helmets and harnesses and this doozy – “If your vehicle breaks down on track you must remain inside unless it is on fire.”
