McCormick teaches college-prep English, AP Language, AP Literature, AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination), SPARC (Sports Professions and Recreation Career Academy) and mentors two new teachers, but there’s a whole solar system of stuff she does that doesn’t appear on the official flight manifest, from attending basketball games to writing reams of heartfelt letters of recommendation. Meanwhile, she’s working on a second master’s degree in her down time. Two things qualify her even more: One, she’s a proud Toreador alum. Two, she lives for learning: “When a student comes in after a long weekend and mentions something that reminded them of a class discussion or something we read,” she says, “I get a little skip in my step.”
