Not every city has its own fitness center, but this one is a testament to the planning and resources that the city of Monterey has put into the health and welfare of the greater community. Within this 72,000-square-foot factory of fitness are two huge upstairs dance and fitness studios, nicely appointed women’s and men’s locker rooms, a vast cardio fitness center, personal trainers, a stretching area, a seriously stocked weight room, a large pool, a water slide, a kid/therapy pool and his and hers saunas. They have stationary machines with views of TVs and some with views of the sky outside. There’s a shiny gym that’s teeming with activity. The Sports Center turns 25 this year, and it’s in great shape. So are generations of people who have discovered the joy of fitness within these walls.
