Education doesn’t end when the school bell rings for kids visiting this East Salinas library. After the bell, a free meal fuels study at the library’s homework center, staffed with young tutors. Little kids develop literacy while reading to dogs or during family story time. Older students discover history and movements not mentioned in textbooks, by way of the comprehensive Chicano Cultural Resource Center. Meanwhile, the book paletero – an ice cream cart loaded with books that can be checked out – heads into nearby neighborhoods.
