It’s not just snuggles here, though that’s part of the appeal. Volunteers also help out with disaster relief. For example, Big Sur residents displaced by the Soberanes Fire included pets and livestock, and the SPCA for Monterey County strengthened the relief effort by sheltering 232 pets. That included canines, cats, birds, scaly friends and one tarantula. The operation was powered with help from 350 active volunteers. The Ruff Start Rescue program provides a second chance for shelter dogs that may need extra training, socialization or TLC before being adopted into a home—and model inmates at Salinas Valley State Prison do the training. At the SPCA, win-win is a daily endeavor.
