There’s an active quest to one day create colonies in space, like on the moon, and other planets, including Mars. But people need to eat, so the question is: how to grow food in space? (And not those poop potatoes that astronaut Mark Watney, played by Matt Damon, grew in The Martian.) In 2015, a NASA crew on the International Space Station successfully grew a crop of “Outredgeous” red romaine lettuce. Sounds like the perfect job for Earthbound Farm. The organic grower started on 2.5 acres in Carmel Valley in 1984, and today it’s a leading global grower of organic produce, with thousands of pesticide-free crops—including fresh organic red romaine lettuce.
