Crystal Fish doesn’t take reservations on Friday or Saturday nights, and you don’t feel like waiting for a table—so your friends go without you. And right as you slip into your Uggs, they start Instagramming their dinner: the delicate sunomono salad with tako (octopus), the rich saba shio (grilled mackerel), the fat Totoro roll with its glistening crown of tobiko (flying fish roe). One friend posts an artful shot of her empty sake cup, captioning it simply, domo. And what do you get, at home on your bed, fingers hungrily swiping instead of gripping chopsticks? Fomo. Nothing but bitter fomo.
