The Medflys’ Reunion Show
Sept. 26, 2015, Planet Gemini
Old rock ‘n’ roll bands getting back together leaves plenty of opportunity for things to go south in a hurry - like, say, at a winery or the county fair. But this past fall, to celebrate Kelly Sorenson’s 50th birthday and to raise money and awareness for cancer research, Monterey’s iconic ’80s punk rock party band The Medflys got back together 35 years after they first took the stage. In room full of gray beards, old flannel shirts and tequila, it was an authentic steam valve release from the pressures of the present. Ray and the Forget Me Nots opened the show and looked great - and sounded better than ever. Then the Medflys turned back the clock and brought big grins and swinging hips to all assembled. There is that cliché that youth is wasted on the young. For a few hours in September, with the sound turned up real loud, it turned out sometimes old guys do rule.
