In the classic folk tale, hungry travelers boil a pot of water with nothing but a stone in it. As people pass by, they contribute ingredients until the soup is rich and plentiful. The Food Bank for Monterey County metaphorically makes stone soup every day, turning each $1 donation into $5 worth of food. That’s even more remarkable considering that this time last year, an arsonist torched four of their trucks and the loading dock. With an outpouring of community support, the Food Bank was able to quickly get back to its mission: delivering sustenance to thousands of Monterey County households in need.
