The Farm Bureau’s 430 members prep, plant and harvest the Salinas Valley’s signature crops. They also grow the greens responsible for the proverbial “lettuce curtain,” a cultural divide between the Valley and the Peninsula. But the Farm Bureau has proven itself a leader in pulling back the curtain by participating in talks about the Monterey Peninsula water supply project. It’s a bold outreach effort Executive Director Norm Groot views as the differentiating factor for the Farm Bureau. “We’ve been able to forge partnerships,” Groot says, “while we are out there working to protect resources.”
