In 2011, when political hip-hop theater collective Baktun 12 wanted to put on a new series of plays called reAlisal: Your Neighbor’s Stories – stories about the Alisal neighborhood, as told by Alisal residents – they chose East Salinas’ Bread Box to do so. When Cornerstone Theater Company out of L.A. was looking to do the same in 2012, they interviewed people from Alisal, cast Alisal folks, and staged their play about Alisal at the Bread Box. This past January, when Baktun 12 was ready to launch reAlisal: Stories de Acosta Plaza, a follow-up to Your Neighbor’s Story, it thought inside the Box again. And it couldn’t have been more germane or closer to its subject: The Bread Box shares a fence with Acosta Plaza, aka Laurel Townhouses, a housing community that the material for the play came from. If the Bread Box theatrical shows were a T-shirt slogan, it wouldn’t just say I <3 East Salinas, it would say I = East Salinas.
