What would you do with $900,000? Probably anything but throw it at losing political campaigns. That’s how much cash sank into dueling 2013 ballot measures M and K, which would’ve redefined features of the Fort Ord Reuse Plan. Both measures failed, but both brought attention to the untamed wilderness the U.S. Army handed over after Fort Ord closed. The newest National Monument trailhead, complete with a shiny new sign, leads to stunning views of the Salinas Valley. And Measure M helped energize a new generation of runners, hikers and cyclists. This is democracy in action; it just moves slower than a mountain biker in uphill sand.
