Fort Ord National Monument

Driving at 55 mph on two-lane Highway 68 left little room for a left turn into an eroded, downsloping dirt parking lot. Hence this formerly facility-less gateway to Fort Ord trails came with a life-risking turn onto or off of the high-speed road, which – given the grand vistas, mountain-bike single tracks, horse paths and dog-walking wonders – was still worth it. Better yet, now that Fort Ord has been made a National Monument, some resulting money mean the spot now enjoys a proper turn lane, paved driveway into a paved parking area plus bathrooms and horse-trailer parking.
