The Poop on Squid Squid: It would appear that you have yourself recovered from a bad case of anosmia, or, in the alternative, greediness, shortsightedness, or some other moral deficiency with regard to PG''s choice to cut sewer spending, and have now become the moral standard bearer. Squid old boy, you once chastised me for being unprofessional and indeed unethical for hammering the PG staff and Council while my sister was a candidate for mayor. For years, we rang the alarm that PG was running out of money to pay for basic infrastructure in favor of a fancy City Hall and mega salaries for the City employees. The Parsons Engineering report was not new and the Council led by Mayor Koffman chose to ignore the sewer and street repair in favor of a new City Hall some three years prior to the last election, wherein the Weekly endorsed Koffman for a third term.

So don''t blame the council for being brain dead or senile, they are just doing what they were elected to do, that is, maintain the status quo and service their primary constituency, the City Staff. Squids who live in glass houses...

Can''t See the Poop?

I have a suggestion for any of the Pacific Grove councilmembers who may have a problem recognizing a load of crap.

Read your column. That''ll do it.

The End of Local Radio

The abrupt format change of radio station KAZU from a local community-based resource to just another outlet for satellite feed has left me, and many others, feeling like we have lost a close friend. Most of the music that means so much to me today is music that I first heard on KAZU and I am grateful for that enrichment. There are other stations that I can, and have, turned to for more than just the generic mainstream offerings, but it''s not the same.

Beyond the music, though, the old KAZU represented the type of community that I felt proud to be a part of. A comparison of the following two mission statements might help to explain the loss that I and so many others are feeling. The first statement was taken, today, from the monterey2000.com website-a local search engine that allows businesses to list information about themselves; KAZU''s information apparently has not been updated recently. The second is taken from the new KAZU website.

Old self-description: "KAZU-FM provides the Monterey Peninsula and vicinity with non-commercial community radio services of the highest quality, emphasizing alternative forms of information and entertainment to those populations overlooked by the mainstream media outlets. KAZU provides programming that is technologically, culturally and artistically innovative, promoting within our communities understanding of human diversity and individual responsibility. We utilize our medium to create an environment promoting cooperation and respect for our fellow human beings. KAZU will always operate with integrity, fairness, and a commitment to community access."

New self-description: "The mission of KAZU is to enrich to Monterey Bay community through non-commercial radio programming."

The old KAZU may be gone, but I won''t forget its ideals or what it gave to those who listened.

Correction

The "Cromwell" referred to in last week''s review of A Man For All Seasons should have been Thomas, and not Oliver, who lived much later and was a much more nasty fellow. We regret the error.
