Bach to Bach Bach  Loved your Bach and his blue glasses cover [Bach to the Future, July 11-17]. But to serious Bach Business. Much as I like the harpsichord, Bach''s keyboard music sounds better on the piano. All you have to do is listen to Glenn Gould play the Goldberg Variations to realize that. There is no doubt in my mind that Bach would have felt the same way if the piano had been around when he was alive. Mozart did.

I enjoyed C. K. Smith''s article on the Bach Festival-however I must say that no B Minor Mass in his top 10 Bachfest picks is like no Jimi Hendrix in the top 10 Woodstock picks.

A Well-Trained Cat

Squid mentions that it would be helpful if cats could use the "John" [Animal Nightmare, July 11-18]. Thought he would enjoy this snapshot my uncle gave me years ago.

Schooling the District

MPUSD properties are coming up on the chopping block, soon. You and I won''t benefit when this happens.

Pacific Grove and Carmel School districts enrollment decline is one percent. Both have money, quality education, and passed tax bonds to promote future needs of their respective community youth education. Pacific Grove has held onto all of its properties even though in the mid eighties "a group" attempted to sell off the Robert Down and David Avenue Schools.

In or about 1984-85 MPUSD sold off several properties which included Fremont Junior High on Kimball Avenue in Seaside. I have been successful in discovering the facts surrounding this sale and development of megabucks worth of housing-none of which has benefited the District, only the developers.

The combined number of classrooms lost is proportionately less than the larger number of portable buildings which were purchased after these sales. Whereas the current district figures lead us to believe we are in not-crowded classrooms with declining enrollment, the opposite is true.

The question is: can our families and children afford to wait? The answer is: we must raise the money now in the form of personal taxes. Now is the time to participate!

Grizzly Details

Good article about Iraq, with points of view we should all be aware of [A Dangerous Game, July 11-17]. There is no doubt in my mind that Saddam Hussein is dangerous and unpredictable, like a grizzly bear. If you cross paths with a grizzly, it may attack-or it may not. Most likely it will not, but keep your eye on it because if it does, you have to shoot to kill.

However, if you corner the grizzly in its own lair and start throwing rocks at it, the bear will attack you for sure. And in the dark reaches of the cave your aim might not be so good.

Blues vs. News

Excuse me, but aren''t universities supposed to bring culture to a community -not take it away? What happened to KAZU? It was culture-our culture. The station manager is not from around here. The bigwigs from CSUMB aren''t from around here. What we do have around here is a diverse population with clubs and coffee houses which play jazz, blues, international folk, etc. There are no news clubs! People don''t have parties and play news. You''re either part of the problem or part of the solution. CSUMB, you are the former. Thanks.
