Americans either take coffee down – a cup of Joe – or elevate it into something trendy. But there is a world of coffee out there, from the citrus-laced mazagran of Portugal to India’s turmeric latte (which actually doesn’t require caffeine, but does need a dash of pepper).

A selection of the world’s offerings can be found at The Creperie Cafe in Seaside, where they prepare favorites from Cuba, Argentina and elsewhere. Yuanyang, for instance, is a Hong Kong tradition that combines coffee and tea in one cup. A spoonful of raw sugar loosens the astringent grip of black tea and wisps away the charred remnants of espresso, giving the condensed milk drink a comforting caramel sensation. Café Bombon from Spain first appeals to the eye, with layers of condensed milk and a frothed top. It then favors your palate – sweet and rich, with a toasty warmth and a bitter impulse that is never quite set off.

Marocchino and Cafe Vienna are two similar presentations from different countries. The former is an Italian masterpiece that overlaps the hearty spite of espresso with the friendlier bitterness of cocoa, along with its sweet serenity. The French version is more decadent, with a swirl of whipped cream. As it blends into the latte, the drink begins to resemble a genteel hot chocolate, untroubled by the shot of dark coffee other than a reserved roasted note.

There are other global coffee drinks on the menu, of course – neither pedestrian nor trendy, just universal.
