WHO’S IN TOWN?
Van loads of 40 farmers, agricultural industry reps and strawberry breeders and researchers hit organic farms for a field tour to see how organic stacks up to conventional. They’ll stop at High Ground Organics and Cassidy Ranch in Watsonville and Agriculture and Land-Based Training (ALBA) in Salinas. At each farm, UC Santa Cruz and San Jose State researchers will talk about how organic strawberry trials are faring. Carol Shennan covers crop yields; Alexander Gershenson takes a look at the effect of organic production on carbon sequestration in soils; and Diego Nieto speaks on pest management. The tour is sold out, but members of the public are welcome to sign up for a waiting list.
