WHAT’S UP WITH THAT?
A reader wanted to know what the story was behind the big tractor regularly spotted at Monterey State Beach (aka Del Monte Beach), namely if it was an erosion-control exercise and how long it’s been going on. City of Monterey Parks and Beach staff report it patrols a couple of times a week, with a giant rake attached that gathers rotting kelp and algae. The foliage is deposited near the high tide line to be broken up and swept back out. The practice has been in place since 1989.
