You can be too at the annual Friends of the Big Sur Library Book and Bake Sale this Friday-Sunday at the Ripplewood Resort. • Pianist Jura Margulis returns to Hidden Valley in Carmel Valley 2:30pm Sunday for a program of music by Alexander Scriabin, Franz Schubert, Franz Liszt and pieces he transcribed by Dmitry Shostakovich. • The Museum of Monterey has jammed a disparate group of art shows into the same proximity. They are Monterey Jazz Festival photos and mementos; paintings by Jose Ortiz’s Hijos del Sol honoring mothers; color study paintings by Lucas Blok; and a seven-screen video poem by former MoM executive director Mark Baerbased on Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring. 372-5477.

• Over in Salinas, SOMOS Gallery is keeping the raw spirit of youthful street culture alive and kicking (and pushing) with their Punk, Thrash and Skate show. It’s made up of work by Little Jenny, Holly Anderson, Lucas Musgrave, Jason Arnold, Mark Widmann and Noah Greenberg. 422-9200.

• Three months after the Arts Council for Monterey County awarded Philip Glass a Champion of the Arts trophy for Lifetime Achievement, he was picked last April as the 11th Glenn Gould Prize Laureate, joining classical music figures like Yo-Yo Ma, Leonard Cohen, Jose Antonio Abreu (founder of El Sistema) and Pierre Boulez in earning that prize, which is also awarded for lifetime achievement. Bob Ezrin, chair of the Glenn Gould Prize Jury, says: “Philip Glass is one of the towering figures of modern music. With an iconic career that has spanned fifty years, his body of work is unrivaled in its breadth and depth.”

• Just days after announcing that they are going to re-up on conductor and music director Max Bragado-Darmann’s contract, the Monterey Symphonyannounced their program for their 70th anniversary season. And there is some exciting stuff in it. Wagner, Strauss and Shostakovich in October. Copland and Ives in November.
