Figuring out what to do with the stray tabby that lurks around your porch has historically been a sad dilemma. Turn her in to the shelter, where she’ll be deemed unfit for adoption and euthanized? Or let her keep having litter after litter, creating more stray kitties? An awesome program called Shelter-Neuter-Return hatches a win-win solution: Trap the cat in a baited cage, drive her to Salinas Animal Shelter or Monterey County Animal Services, and wait for her to show back up at your door in a few days with a little nick in one ear. (Seaside Animal Control offers the service, too.) Veterinarians with the program spay/neuter, vaccinate, de-worm and microchip the strays before they’re re-released in their own neighborhoods, so they can keep prowling without breeding. Smart!
