Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 811

The dinner featured a tender slab of prime rib so big it hogged the plate from steamed veggies and mashed potatoes with gravy. DJ Noli was grimly serious about spinning upbeat Top 40 jams to a modest dance floor. Laser lights, neon signs and icicle lights illuminated the wood paneling, corkboard announcements, trophies, photos and bar patrons. The $25 cover charge went to benefit veterans, while old friends cackled at each other’s jokes and bought each other rounds. The Fort Ord Memorial VFW Post 811 in Marina, set in a nondescript residential neighborhood, might have been one of the more unlikely venues to take your sweetheart on Valentine’s Day, but it turned out to be one of the most earnest places of warmth and camaraderie.
