You might not know what draws you to the 192-year-old building as the moon rises, but Hattie the Ghost does. Some say the Monterey socialite, who lived in the old Stokes Adobe until her 1948 death, still haunts 1833 at night, making chandeliers swing and tumblers of absinthe disappear. (That’s her somber portrait on the wall in the lounge area, eyes all shifty.) Of course, there’s a less spooky explanation for your patronage: expert mixes from the bar’s celebrated cocktails to the DJ’s decidedly not Top-40 selection. No wonder Hattie won’t leave at last call.
