BYOS

Almost every part of Monterey County has now banned plastic foam takeout containers. Almost every city has now banned single-use plastic carry-out bags, too. So what’s next in the movement to quit all the stupid disposable plastic that clogs our landfills, litters our beaches and poisons marine life? You might think it’s bottles: San Francisco has already started that ball rolling. But we’re fancier than that on the shores of Monterey Bay. Citizen crusaders led by Save Our Shores have launched The Last Straw campaign, urging restaurant and bar managers to stop sticking plastic tubes in every frilly cocktail and cup of ice water. Here’s hoping the campaign trains us to just sip from the glass. Or try biodegradable straws. Even better, invest in a reusable one. The new way to party is BYOS.
