Farmers Market Big Bucks
MPC Farmers Market
Monterey Peninsula College
930 Fremont St., Monterey
Friday 10am-1pm
You rush to the farmers market at Monterey Peninsula College around noon on Friday and open your wallet to discover you only have $3 cash. It happens. But thanks to the smarts of Market Director Catherine Barr, customers can now saunter over to the flower stand on the far end, swipe a credit or debit card, tell the vendor how much to charge it and get the equivalent in “Farmers Market Big Bucks.” They’re oversized green $1 bills, and they’re good throughout the market. There’s no fee, and you can use them like gift certificates. They make for great kids’ currency too. (I put my 4-year-old in charge of a stack to build math and budgeting skills.) Only trick: You can’t get change, so if your total at the apple stand is $4.50, grab another Pink Lady.
