According to the most current Monterey County Crop Report, Pinot Noir trails only Chardonnay in terms of acreage. But it also soars past Chard in average price per ton, $1,735 to $1,167. That’s because of the soaring Santa Lucia Highlands vineyards and the mists that cool the famously fickle grape by night, allowing for longer hang times and the riches readers taste in prime examples like Boekenoogen and Bernardus, Pisoni and Pessagno, Cima Collina and Chock Rock, Paraiso and Puma Road.
