Blanketing the upper Salinas Valley and stretching to the sea, Monterey County’s gold is a bright, shiny red, an unassuming berry that hides in the leaves and only reveals its sweetness in juicy, refreshing bites. Strawberries raked in $869 million for local farmers in 2013, an 11-percent jump from the year before, and despite stout competition from leaf and head lettuces, the little berries continue to reign supreme as the region’s most lucrative crop. With only a 25-percent increase in acreage since 1993, the county’s strawberries have more than quadrupled in value during that time, and the future looks even sweeter.
