Old Capitol Books is more than a bookstore; it’s a literary hotspot. There are book talks and open mics and, for the extra nerdy, discussion groups on philosophy and political theory. The books are mostly used and are reasonably priced, and owner Matthew Sundt curates the collection to fit the tastes of Monterey’s reading public. When Sundt bought the store and saved it from closure in 2012, he thought he could create something significant in the community. It worked.
