The future has already started.

• In a town that’s had some not-so-admirable revelations lately, St. Mark’s Guild Hall in King City is doing a very admirable thing. They’re hosting their second weekend of the documentary play Laramie Project, part eulogy for, and part investigation of, the murder of Matthew Shepard. The two remaining shows are Friday and Saturday, refreshments at 6pm, dinner at 6:30pm and shows at 7:30pm. Reservations only by calling 737-2067.

• Christian McEwen signs her book World Enough and Time, about “slowing down in everyday living,” 7:30pm Friday at Luminata Books & Gifts (631 Cass St., Monterey, 333-1110). If there’s time, she’ll talk too. Just kidding. Of course there will be time.

• The California Native Plant Society loves the art and the beauty of nature, which is the source, the inspiration – probably the beginning of the artistic inclination – for human beings. They offer to take you on a walking and talking tour of Fort Ord, identifying various plants and wildflowers 10am-1pm Saturday. Call 444-8645 for info and directions.

• One of the strengths of the Carl Cherry Center is that it’s diverse in its offerings, cycling between talks, films, art, music, poetry, theater and events for which there are no names yet. The event at 2pm Saturday has a name: Women’s Voices: The Stories We Keep. A gathering of women poets, including Kate Aver Avraham, Laura Bayless, Jennifer Lagier, with music by Jeanne McCombs.

• The Mirth O’ Matics are an improv group in their sixth year now, and for the first time, they take audience suggestions at Green Chalk Contemporary (616 Lighthouse Ave., New Monterey, 394-3031, $15) 7:30pm Saturday. The art gallery is currently showing abstract work by Francie Hester and Anne Marchand. Wonder what would happen if the improvers were set loose on the work?

• The fourth annual Teen Film Festival, takes place 7pm Sunday at the Salinas Performing Arts Center (431 W. Alisal St., Salinas, 758-7311). The teens can win cash for their short films up to 15 minutes. But probably the real reward will be in the showing itself. As a one-time MPC film student, I remember that terror… uh, thrill.

• A documentary showing at Century Cinemas (1700 Del Monte Center, Monterey) 2pm Sunday, 2pm and 7pm Wednesday is called And the Oscar Goes To… the history of the Academy Awards from 1927 to today. A movie about movies. How meta is that?
