Jerry Takigawa’s solo show at Green Chalk Contemporary opens this Saturday.

• Bubba G. Scotch, 52, of Salinas, passed away Jan. 23. Part of his bio highlights the public persona many knew: "He was an influential DJ and radio host for KHDC for 34 years. A pioneer of the scene, he mentored many DJs and recording artists. He was loved by the community and known as the people's DJ. His eccentric stage presence, turntable mixing and entertaining MC skills would light up the stage." • Jerry Takigawa had a photography show at the Museum of Craft and Design in San Francisco. That museum’s executive director described his work as “showing us a quiet beauty, embodies a powerful purpose… ” The show was devoted to photos of artfully arranged pieces of plastic that had been recovered from the bodies of albatross birds that had mistaken our lethal trash for food. It ended there Jan. 19. If you didn’t get a chance to see it, selected photographs from that show, accompanied by text from his book Grace in Uncertainty, are assembled in a solo show at Green Chalk Contemporary (616 Lighthouse Ave., Monterey) that opens 6-8pm this Saturday. It’s called False Food: A Metaphor for Survival.

• On Jan. 20, the Carmel Woman’s Club (San Carlos and Ninth, Carmel) got fired up and ready to go with the first of their 2014 speaker series, which brings luminaries from all sorts of walks of life into their cozy cottage meeting hall for really informed, enlightening and personal talks before their members and the public. Their next speaker is Kip Hawley, former TSA administrator, who, at 2pm on Monday, talks about his experience building the TSA and how it combats terrorism. • Naturalist and educator Alena Porte of Ventana Wildlife Society comes to speak 7pm Tuesday at All Saints’ Church (Lincoln and Ninth, Carmel) as part of theCarmel Public Library Foundation’s Community Night with the Library.
