ARTIFACTS - Author Nelda Hirsch talks about painter M. Evelyn McCormick during Art in the Adobes.

• Remember Jeff Hoke? He was the Monterey Bay Aquarium senior exhibit designer profiled in the Weekly in 2010 for having created a graphic novel (of sorts) called The Museum of Lost Wonder, about the anachronistic world of early alchemy, mythology and science. He has another piece he’s releasing as an addendum to the book called the Codex of Creativity Folio. He’s pretty brilliant, so you should check it out in the Curiosity Shop at LostWonder.org.

• Maria Teutsch and the Homestead Review Club of Hartnell College bring to the fore poet Ellen Bass, the widely published writer of the lauded Mules of Love, the groundbreaking No More Masks! An Anthology of Poems by Women, and the million-selling nonfiction book The Courage to Heal: A Guide for Women Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse. She reads her work and workshops 11am-12:15pm Thursday, at the Performing Arts 125 building. 755-6810.

• An open house 11am-2pm Saturday for the future 42-bed Eco-Hostel on Seaside Fort Ord land – a sister hostel to the New Monterey one – will include goodies, music, art and info. 649-0375.

• The Fourth Annual Salinas Valley Pride Celebration touts the talent and creativity of the Salinas Valley LGBT community. Taking place at Hacienda (1449 North Davis Road, Salinas, 235-2198), it takes the form of singers, rappers, drag queens, DJs and more, hosted by RuPaul’s Drag Race star Jujubee. It’s $12, 18 and over, 7pm-1am Saturday.

• Lighthouse Cinemas (525 Lighthouse Ave., Pacific Grove) hosts two screenings of the Specticast broadcast of A Dancer’s Dream, a ballet film from Giants Are Small and the New York Philharmonic that re-imagines Igor Stravinsky’s The Fairy’s Kiss and Petrushka. Giants morphs Stravinsky’s avant-garde compositions into a hybrid of music, dance, live animation, pre-recorded video, puppetry and circus arts. It plays 1pm Sunday and 6:30pm Tuesday. No rioting this time, please.

• The Community Foundation for Monterey County’s LEAD Institute (Leadership Education and Development) is a 12-day, 10-month series of seminars that trains people from nonprofits to enhance their leadership and management skills. Recent graduates include Vanisha Evans Douvon of Youth Music Monterey County, M. Crystal Zamora of the Literacy Campaign for Monterey County, and a handful of others. Its value is exponential. They’re taking applications (due Oct. 1, 2013) for the 2014 sessions, at CFMCO.org/lead.
