• In addition to emailing calendar@mcweekly.com, on the Weekly’s website, under the A&E tab, visitors are invited to upload their art, entertainment and culture events for submission to our print and online calendar. We ask for two weeks notice so that they can be vetted, edited and rewritten. Here’s one of the reasons why they don’t post to our website automatically: One “green” event omits key info, and is entitled “Save Nature – Plantation Event.”
• After filing a final report from last weekend’s First City Music Festival, longtime local arts and culture reporter, columnist and calendar maestro Marcos Cabrera posted his last The Beat column. “After 12 years at the Monterey County Herald and 18 years as a local journalist, I’m moving on,” he writes. A classy and moving farewell from a man who has been diligent in covering – and being part of – the county’s arts scene, especially in regards to hip-hop, Salinas, Latino and youth culture. In his next venture he says, “I’m staying close to home and joining a locally based, national arts organization.” That organization, by the way, is the National Steinbeck Center. Good job, Marcos. You did this vocation proud.

• The Monterey Peninsula College Art Gallery has shown a lot of contemporary artists of late, but they hail mostly from Santa Cruz. Here is an opportunity to reshift the focus of our community college to… our community. Submit proposals for solo, duo or group exhibits by Oct. 31 for the six shows of their academic years 2014-15. The work stays up for 5 weeks and can be sold. Get a gallery prospectus from melissapickford@yahoo.com, call 646-3060 for info.
