The Summer Butterfly Concert Series is as idyllic as it sounds.

From a small stage nestled between oak trees comes a smooth, classic jazz tune. Guests relax on a patio, bright blue umbrellas covering their picnics. To the left, an elderly couple slow dances while some 30 monarch butterflies flutter from flower to flower. Two kids lie on their stomachs, cameras in hand, as they attempt to photograph one. A calming floral scent hangs in the air.

It’s just another Sunday afternoon at The Garden Song in Elkhorn Slough near Moss Landing.

For the fifth consecutive year, the venue’s Summer Butterfly Concert Series provides guests with the chance to listen to live music while exploring The Garden Song’s 5-acre dahlia farm and its vast natural elements. This year, however, listeners get to do a little more: Open a small, white box, release an orange and black monarch and make a special wish, set to music.

“The music is great [and] it’s pretty out here,” Pebble Beach resident Mike Goldfarb says. “You wouldn’t think that it was here.It’s a little unique place.”

When Jim Goff first built the stage between the trees, it simply served as a place for his wife, Colleen, to perfect her songwriting. Since then, it has come to host an elegant event that highlights local and national touring artists. This summer has welcomed everyone from Brazilian bossa nova singer Avi Wisnia to jazz and pop-influenced Skylark.

“My friends started coming over and we thought we needed an audience so we started inviting the neighbors,” Colleen says. “My husband and I travel all over to play. We know all of these musicians from playing.”

This Sunday, guests check out Jaris Dreaming, a well-traveled artist who has shared stages with influential musicians such as Bruce Springsteen. His sound is weaves rock with samba and notable jazz and folk influences.

“He has a very good message about peace and love and no war,” Colleen says. “He’s fabulous. We’re so lucky to have him.”

The series runs through the end of September. Other upcoming acts include Hobbyhorse and its enchanting blend of authentic folk and classic Celtic music Aug. 25. Santa Cruz’s Harpin’ Johnny brings bluesy rock accompanied by a skillful harmonica Sept. 8. On Sept. 22, Joshua Lowe and the Juncos represent an energetic yet intimate style of bluegrass-roots music. The final event is a Sept. 29showcase act with four singer-songwriters taking the stage.

And that’s just part of the show. Discovering the gardens and enjoying a nice picnic are pretty much mandatory.

“[My husband and I] have been building these gardens up for 20 years,” Colleen says. “I just think it’s really wonderful that people can come here and bring lunch, roam the gardens and listen to acoustic, live music. Everyone leaves here extremely happy.”
