I am writing in regard to your article (“Traffic stop becomes criminal case for homeless woman,” June 13-19). I was at Sunny’s two court hearings. Why has this case made it to court? It is a clear case of unjust prejudice against the homeless by both the police and the public court system. I fail to see where she has broken any laws, nothing that warrants a court appearance. It appears instead the police could well be showing a bias against the homeless.

The judge should set things right by throwing this case out of his court and direct the police to look instead for real criminals at night. The police need to start protecting defenseless homeless women and men who are trying to find a safe place to sleep at night in place of harassing them. Monterey Peninsula churches need to allow the homeless to sleep in their parking lots at night. - Pastor Jim Nelson | Monterey

It is about time that we started exposing cases like the one that appeared in this article. The police and courts are free to harass anyone and tie them up in an endless series of hearings and fines, and they do so regularly. Just check out the number of people arrested or in jail/prison for nonviolent crimes.

This process is difficult for anyone to go through, especially someone who lacks resources that most of us possess. And to top it off, so much of this could be avoided if the cops, judges, and lawyers didn’t get so much pleasure in ruining other people’s lives. The charges against her should be dropped immediately. - MichaelF | via Web

This woman deserves not a criminal charge. No harm has she done; no ill will does she wish the people of Monterey County. I believe the charges against her should be dropped. -Peaceful Citizen | via Web
