Salinas District 2 Councilmember Tony Barrera and Monterey County Supervisor Luis Alejo were appointed to chair and vice-chair of the Monterey-Salinas Transit (MST) Board of Directors on July 17.
Barrera will replace outgoing chair holder Mary Ann Carbone, who is the current Sand City Mayor, who has held the position since 2024. Alejo will replace the position of Gonzales City Councilmember Lorraine Worthy.
The 13-member board consists of representatives from the Monterey County Board of Supervisors, mayors and city councilmembers from each of the county’s 12 cities.
These members include King City Mayor Mike LeBarre, Soledad City Councilmember Fernando Cabrera and Greenfield City Councilmember Ariana Rodriguez.
The board meets monthly to vote on agency business and ensures MST effectively serves its community while maintaining fiscal and operational accountability, according to the MST webpage.
“I am honored to serve as Board Chair and work alongside my fellow board members, agency leadership, employees and community partners to continue the good work that connects people to opportunity, strengthens our communities, and supports a more sustainable future,” Barrera said in a statement. “I look forward to building on our agency’s successes and helping ensure we continue to meet the needs of the riders and communities we serve."
Alejo did not respond for a comment.
Both Barrera and Alejo will serve their positions until July 2028.
