It’s spooky time.
For Jesus Ruvalcaba, the owner or Paper Tacos, a bilingual greeting card company based in Salinas, it’s time to show what Halloween and Day of the Dear, two sister holidays, are what they are all about.
For instance, for Halloween, with it’s great American roots, the key for Paper Tacos is to give it a cultural twist, Ruvalcaba says. In mainstream English-speaking culture there are things like pumpkins and witches.
But in Paper Tacos, La Llorona (The Wailing Woman), gets center stage in one of their greeting cards. Also, the Boogeyman, which in Mexico, a country know for its plethora of monsters and hunger for horror tales, is known as “El Cucuy.”
“As Latinos we grew up hearing folktales,” Ruvalcaba says. “So we have a greeting card of La Llorona in the water.”
The unique greeting cards can be found in several outlets in town and across the state, as well as on their website at papertacos.com/pages/where-to-buy-paper-tacos.
