I love good news wherever and whenever I can get it, and that’s especially true if it’s local.
That’s why I’d like to call your attention to a story my colleague Dave Faries wrote in this week’s issue that delves into the latest goings-on at Rocky Point Restaurant in Big Sur, which has been closed since 2020.
I, for one, have missed it greatly—there’s no place I like to take visitors more after a short drive down the Big Sur coast, or after a hike at Garrapata State Park.
And finally, it seems like there’s momentum to get the restaurant open again, as developer Patrice Pastor, who bought the property in 2021, has reached an agreement with the California Coastal Commission to clear Coastal Act violations regarding public access committed by the previous owners—Faries’ story has all the details, which include adding new amenities like a picnic area and parking spaces equipped for electric car charging.
Once that happens—the Coastal Commission will vote on an agreement to clear the violations June 14—the door opens for Pastor to submit plans to the county to update the property.
I hope it all happens sooner than later, because watching the sunset at Rocky Point, or having a sun-splashed lunch as the rugged sea churns below, are among the most delightful pleasures of living in this beautiful place.
