Erik Chalhoub here, feeling inspired after reading an article in this week’s edition of the Weekly by Pam Marino.
Marino highlights the life of Carmel resident Carmela Cantisani, a championship skier, food entrepreneur, language instructor and author. And she didn’t let blindness slow her down in enjoying life.
Cantisani was born with retinitis pigmentosa, which breaks down the retinas over time. She told Marino that she learned to manage life just like everyone else.
“One way or another, you make do with what you have,” she said.
Cantisani didn’t just “make do,” she thrived. As a skier, she won three gold medals for the U.S. in the Winter World Championship for the Disabled in 1986, later earning two bronze medals for Italy in the 1988 Winter Paralympics.
Marino’s story is an extended version of what appears in the 2024-2025 Living Well magazine, a resource guide created by the County of Monterey Area Agency on Aging and the Monterey County Weekly.
In it, you’ll learn about the wealth of resources that are available for seniors and people with disabilities in Monterey County, from housing and financial assistance, to social opportunities and advocacy services.
In addition to Cantisani’s story, there are other articles highlighting the important work older adults and those with disabilities are doing throughout the county. The magazine is available at the AAA office (730 La Guardia St. in Salinas), most local senior-serving nonprofits, community centers and care centers. You can also grab a copy at the Weekly’s office, 668 Williams Ave. in Seaside, or check it out online.
If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, I recommend flipping through the pages—you’ll likely find where to go for help here. Or if you just need to feel inspired, you’ll definitely get it here.
