For hundreds of years, seafaring vessels have used the harbor of Monterey to bring goods into the region. Due to offshore rocks, squalls and fog, many ships have called Monterey Bay their final resting place. A new exhibit devoted to the subject – Shipwrecks: Every Broken Piece Tells a Story, opening in the Casa Gutierrez Community Art Gallery on Friday, June 12. The exhibit is composed of actual shipwreck parts along with photos and paintings of the wrecks. “I think the shipwreck pieces are my favorite items though they might be less photogenic,” says guide Stuart Thornton of the Monterey State Historic Park. There is an opening reception a night prior – 5:30-7pm, June 11, accompanied by sea shanties. Open 11am-4pm on Fridays and Saturdays throughout the summer. 590 Calle Principal, Monterey.
