According to a 2013 study, fish can distinguish between different genres of music. From July 4 through Sept. 6, the fish at the Monterey Bay Aquarium will get a diverse assortment of music, courtesy of Evenings by the Bay. Saturdays cross genres, while Sundays bring jazz from Monterey Jazz Festival musicians.
The after-hours summer music series kicks off Independence Day with the Monterey Acoustic Project. The local supergroup, specializing in all things danceable from the ’70s and ’80s, features singer Neal Banks, virtuoso drummer Mike Shannon and band leader Steve Ezzo on guitar.
On the opposite side of the musical spectrum, Lillie Lemon (Aug. 8) unleashes original electro-pop with the soul of a folk balladeer. The duo, Lemon and multi-instrumental bandmate Erica Wobbles, is in the midst of planning the largest tour of their career: From Chattanooga, Tennessee to Austin, Texas, the month-long journey that kicks off sometime this fall will clock well over 10,000 miles on the odometer.
Ahead of their monster trek across the country, they will also make the largest purchase of their career: a 2015 6-cylinder Mercedes Sprinter, complete with customized interior racks for their equipment.
“We’re taking all of this to the next level,” Lemon says. “We’re not waiting for [a label] to sign us; we’re handling the business ourselves.”
EVENINGS BY THE BAY 6pm Saturday and Sunday, Monterey Bay Aquarium, 886 Cannery Row, Monterey. Free with Aquarium admission ($39.95). 648-4800.
