Known as “Kazu” to his friends, Kazuhiko Sano (1952-2011) was a Japanese artist best known for his extensive work as an illustrator and instructor in San Francisco. As an illustrator, Sano’s works ranged from book covers to movie posters, annual reports, scientific illustrations and limited-edition prints. Some of his more popular works included the Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi movie poster, the Frank Sinatra commemorative U.S. postal stamp, as well as many editorial pieces for the National Geographic and Scientific American magazines. His works are now hanging at Monterey History and Art at Stanton Center and will remain on display until Oct. 26. The museum is located at 5 Custom House Plaza in Monterey; visiting hours are noon-4pm Thursday to Monday.
